I’m excited to share three bird drawings by high school student Ethan Shan on Curious Birder. It’s always interesting to see how others express their appreciation for birds, and Ethan brings his love of nature to the page through his artwork.

Ethan is a fellow high school student who has been passionate about drawing since he could first hold a pencil. He loves using his experiences and interests to create drawings. In particular, Ethan loves nature and being in nature, and centers many of his works outdoors. Aside from sketching, Ethan enjoys hiking and yoga.

Below are his drawings, accompanied by descriptions adapted from the notes he shared.

This artwork depicts a Cinnamon Teal, a small, brightly colored dabbling duck found primarily in the wetlands of western North America and parts of South America.

This artwork depicts a pair of Scarlet Tanagers, one male, and the other female. They breed in large patches of deciduous forests, especially oaks in eastern North America. During the winter, they will migrate down to northern South America from October and return in May. They normally lay four light-blue eggs and hatch in about two weeks.

This artwork depicts a White-breasted Nuthatch. Nuthatches are unique, as they are non-migratory and have distinctive feeding habits. The White-breasted Nuthatches are especially special among nuthatches because it is the only one that prefers deciduous trees over coniferous trees.

Thank you, Ethan, for sharing your artwork with me! I’m happy to feature another student’s interest in birds and the natural world.

Nice painting. May I ask what makes you interested in painting birds?
